FYI Gab is what happens when people think Freedom of Speech is absolute and denying Nazis a platform is the worse.
The site was created because “Twitter is too left and is silencing conservatives” and courts far right extremists, white supremacists and neo-Nazis. The creators boast that everyone is free to say whatever they want unmoderated
Gab was the platform the Tree of Life synagogue shooter used up until today. His profile has since been wiped clean. Thankfully, someone made an archive of it.
That’s because free speech is an absolute, their freedom to dispense hate is and should be just as protected as your freedom to dispense your hate against them.
Just because someone is saying something doesn’t mean you have to listen to it, or or even not respond to it. There will always be social consequences for the things we say but there should never be legal consequences, that’s a slippery slope no one should want to go down.
It’s not an absolute since it only applies to specific situations no matter what you uncultured potatoes who don’t know a fuck about nothing especially the Constitution say.
Neo Nazis use freedom of speech and useful fools like yourself to gain platforms, followers and to spread their hate. While you’re worried about the slippery slope of a Nazi not being able spread hate propaganda, others will have to worry about the very social consequences you don’t realize will and does happen like today because of that whole “freedoms of speech is absolute no matter what’s being said and who’s being targeted” bullshit.
No it applies to every situation otherwise politicians can make speech rules banning “hate speech” and have them be as grey as possible and eventually they can and will apply to everyone no matter who they subscribe to politically.
Also, it’s more important to be free than it is to be safe.
Nope just this one: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The first word there is Congress as in the government. A private company doesn’t have to give white supremacists a platform nor do they need to.
Heads up Ottawa folks, there is a Vigil against Anti-Semitism and White Supremacy being planned for Sunday, October 28th, 2018. This is in response to the mass shooting in a Pittsburgh Synagogue today which killed 11 people.
Hi! I am Native (Navajo and some mixed in Lakota), but i have a skin disease that takes away all of my melanin, so i am VERY white. I was born with black hair and olive skin, but as i got older, all of my”native” features went away. I go to my reservation every summer and practice my families traditions and cultural teachings a lot, but people always try and put me down as being a “typical white person” when i say im native because of how i look. Do you have any advice for this?
Native identity isn’t about how you look, it’s about the culture you’re connected to. There is no way to “look Native” so just remind people that.
If people are just calling you a white person because you DO look white, I suggest possibly taking it more as a reminder that you are more privileged because you pass as white and your experiences are going to be different than a Brown Natives. Now, if they’re saying that you’re NOT Native because you look white then tell them they can stick it up their colonized asses ;)
Settlers are the people living on indigenous land. Non-Natives include everyone who isn’t Native no matter if they’re living on this land or are still on their own land.
You do understand that children don’t know that about Pocahontas and sometimes neither do adults (especially 20+ years ago). Children aren’t trying to be disrespectful to the real person r white wash her. They don’t know, they just love what they seen on the screen. When they’re older, teens even, then they’re responsible
I know children aren’t trying to be disrespectful, it’s up to adult figures to educate them and tell them “no” when they want to wear a Pocahontas costume.
Would it be okay for a little girl who isn’t native to dress as Pocahontas for Halloween? My daughter is in love with her but I don’t want it to be harmful and want to know if that could be seen as offensive
